Summer holidays and you're looking for an exciting family outing in NRW that will delight children and relax parents? Off to Neandertal - mammoths, climbing adventures and a journey through the history of mankind await you here!
Here, children can experience the Stone Age up close - with real flint workshops, animal encounters and plenty of space to run around and marvel.
Come rain or shine: The Neanderthal Museum and the Neandertal World of Discovery offer the perfect excursion destination for families - guaranteed to be unforgettable.
In the Neanderthal Museum, you can meet real prehistoric stars such as THE Neanderthal ‘Mr N’, the cheeky “Lucy” and the curious ‘Kina’. There is a lot of things to try out - and if you really want to immerse yourself in the Stone Age, get the Stone Age Action Pack: with a little skill, you can puzzle your way through the exhibition and make your own Stone Age necklace!
We are more than just a museum: Europe's largest Stone Age Playground is all about climbing, balancing, muddling and hiding - Stone Age children can really burn off some energy here. A paradise for children, especially in good weather in summer, and there is a separate picnic area for adults.
There are only mammoths in the museum, but on a summer walk to the Ice Age Animal Park you will discover other Ice Age animals such as aurochs, tarpans and bison. There is a short tour for families that starts at the museum.
Brave ones ahead! If you're not afraid of heights, climb up the 22 metre high tower Höhlenblick at the Neanderthal site and travel back to the Stone Age through virtual telescopes. Want to go even faster? Then take the shortcut via the climbing tunnel at over 20 metres!
In the holiday programme, your children will become Stone Age hunters, jewellery artists or fire masters themselves - real adventures to take part in! And at the big museum festival on the last weekend of the summer holiday, lots of activity stands, delicious food and many surprises await your family.
During the summer holidays, we are open from Monday to Sunday (10 am to 6 pm). You can also get a 15% family discount and the public transport discount.
The museum café with its beautiful roof terrace, the picnic area on the Stone Age Playground, the Ristorante Gavi and our sunbathing lawn in the museum garden and on the discovery site offer plenty of opportunities and of course ice cream :) for a little break in between.
You can book tickets conveniently online or buy them spontaneously at the museum ticket office - but we recommend booking online, especially during the holidays, to avoid waiting times.
Yes! During the summer holidays, we offer daily changing hands-on activities, children's tours and workshops all about the Stone Age. You can find all the dates in the events calendar.
No problem - the museum is completely covered and most of our hands-on programmes also take place indoors. The playground and Animal Park can still be explored in wellies when it rains.
Yes, with pleasure! You can distort your own food in the foyer of the museum. In the museum garden, on the Stone Age Playground and at the archaeological site there are many picnic areas in the countryside. Alternatively, there is our museum café for small snacks and refreshments.
Absolutely - the museum, the art trail and the path to the discovery site are barrier-free. Changing tables, family toilets and a dedicated baby bar ;) are also available.
Plan about 1.5 to 2 hours just for the museum - with the discovery site, playground and breaks you can easily spend half a day or even a whole day with us.
Of course! There are also suitable offers for larger families or groups of friends, which you can find here.
The Neanderthal Museum is located directly at the Regiobahn stop Neandertal in Talstraße 300, 40822 Mettmann. Parking spaces for cars, buses and bicycles are available directly on site - please find out about parking options in advance. We are also easy to reach by train.
