Why did the Neanderthals become extinct?

Questions about your visit

  • The museum and the Höhlenblick adventure tower (discovery site) are open from Tuesday to Sunday between 10 am and 6 pm.
  • During the NRW school holidays, the museum is open all day, including Mondays.
  • The museum is also open on public holidays and bridge days.
    • Exceptions: Closed on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year's Eve. Different opening hours: New Year's Day 1 to 6 pm.

On average, our guests spend around two hours in the museum and another hour visiting the discovery site with the Höhlenblick adventure tower. However, you can also spend a whole day with us. The museum is located in the centre of the beautiful Neandertal nature reserve. The hiking trails around the Ice Age game reserve invite you to go hiking or walking. If you have children, you should definitely plan some time for the Stone Age playground.

Of course, we cannot generalise. However, we recommend a visit from the age of four to five. There are lots of hands-on stations in the museum, especially for children, where even younger children will have fun. You can find more information about this on our information page for families. Infants up to the age of three are admitted free of charge.

In the exhibition, all texts and the free audio guide are available in German and English. The texts in the current special exhibition may differ from this. Please check here before your visit. Free text readers are available in the following languages at the box office:

Yes, the free WLAN ‘neanderthal-wifi’ is available throughout the museum as well as at the discovery site and the Höhlenblick adventure tower.

Yes, you can take both your pushchair and bags into the exhibition. Lockers are available in front of the entrance to the exhibition for a fee (50 cent).

Yes, there is both a free cloakroom (no liability) and chargeable (50 cent) lockers in the entrance area. For the locker you need two 50 cent coins (deposit + fee). A coin changer is available. Please also contact our staff.

Yes, but only on DoggyDay, which takes place on the first Friday of every month between 2 and 6 pm. Outside of these times, dogs are only permitted as companion or assistance dogs for people with disabilities and are of course very welcome. Please note: Unfortunately, dogs are not allowed on the Höhlenblick adventure tower for safety reasons. Unfortunately, we cannot make any exceptions here.

Yes, at the end of the exhibition our museum café welcomes you with drinks, cakes and small snacks. Weather permitting, our roof terrace is also open. Our neighbours from the Neanderthal Kiosk and Ristorante Gavi are also looking forward to welcoming you. You can find more information about catering here.

Yes, a free audio guide in German and English as well as a special children's audio guide bring the Neanderthals to life and guide you through the exhibition. Tip: Download the free ‘Neanderthal App’ to use your own headphones and protect the environment. Don't speak German or English? Questions about the tickets

You can find all ticket prices here. For families, there is a 15% discount on all prices listed both online and at the box office. We also offer the following discounts:

  • RUHR.TOPCARD: One-time free admission
  • Art:Card: Free admission
  • Public transport ticket: 1 euros off the total admission price

Yes, you can also buy all tickets at the box office. Tickets for guided tours, the holiday programme, children's birthday parties, workshops and other events are only available in our online shop.

Yes, your RUHR.TOPCARD gives you one free admission to the Neanderthal Museum.

Admission to the discovery site and the Höhlenblick tower is included in the ticket price for the Neanderthal Museum. However, you can also purchase individual tickets for the discovery site online and at the box office. You can find the current prices here.

You can currently pay in the online shop with PayPal, PayPal Express, by credit card, Apple Pay and Google Pay.

No, you are very welcome to show us your online tickets on your smartphone or tablet. The QR code just needs to be clearly visible so that we can scan it at the ticket office. You can also download the tickets to your Google or Apple Wallet.

Questions about photo and video recordings

Yes, photo and video recordings for private purposes are permitted and very welcome throughout the museum and on the discovery site. Of course, we ask that you show consideration for our staff and other guests and comply with data protection regulations. Questions about travelling to us

By car, we recommend using the Neandertal P&R car park (directly at the bus stop) within walking distance of the museum. There are a very limited number of paid parking spaces available in front of the museum (maximum parking time: 4 hours / 6 euros.

The museum is very well connected to public transport with the ‘Neandertal’ S-Bahn stop (approx. 10 minutes' walk). Here the S28 runs between Wuppertal and Kaarster See via Düsseldorf main station. Alternatively, it is about a 20-minute walk to the Hochdahl S-Bahn stop. The S8 runs here between Mönchengladbach and Hagen via Düsseldorf, Neuss and Wuppertal. Buses from Erkrath and Mettmann on lines 741 and 743 stop directly in front of the Neanderthal Museum.

Questions about groups and school classes

Yes, even if you would like to go through the museum without a booked programme, we ask you to register in advance at museum@neanderthal.de or by telephone on +49 (0) 2104 9797-15 for groups of 10 people or more.
