Directions & Parking

Address

Neanderthal Museum | Talstraße 300 | 40822 Mettmann

We generally recommend travelling by public transport. We are well connected to public transport with the S8 and S28 and reward public transport travellers with an additional discount at the ticket desk. If you are travelling by car, we strongly recommend using the free P+R station Neanderthal P2. Further information in the ‘Travelling by car’ tab.

In the central parking lot directly in front of the museum, some parking spaces are reserved for people who have a “parking permit for the disabled”. They are located at the end of the parking lot as seen from the driveway and therefore in close proximity to the museum. These parking spaces are free of charge.

Your parking options:

  • The free P&R Neanderthal P2 car park is located directly above the museum. The walk to the museum takes about 5-10 minutes. Please enter the address in your sat nav before you leave, as you would have to take a longer diversions if you are already standing in front of the museum.
  • Paid car park P1 opposite the museum on Talstraße (max. parking time 4 h, 1.50 €/h).
    • Barrier-free car parks available.
  • Altenheim Neandertal, Talstraße 189 (approx. 25 minutes' walk)
  • Erwepa car park, Mettmanner Str. 51, Erkrath (approx. 25 minutes' walk). On Sundays, a free shuttle service runs between the Erwepa car park and the museum from 11 am and 6 pm.

Your travel options:

  • Regiobahn (S 28) Kaarst-Neuss-Düsseldorf-Mettmann-Wuppertal: Neanderthal stop, 800 m walk to the museum.
  • S-Bahn (S 8) Mönchengladbach-Düsseldorf-Hagen:
Hochdahl stop, 25 minutes walk to the museum
    • Please note: Unfortunately, Google Maps sometimes gives incorrect directions. The Neanderthal Museum cannot be reached on foot via the street "Feldhof". Instead take the street "Thekhaus".
  • Bus route (741) Mettmann-Hilden:
Bus stop Neanderthal/Museum, directly in front of the museum
  • Bus route (743) Mettmann-Erkrath:
Bus stop Neanderthal/Museum, directly in front of the museum

Four free bus parking bays are available approx. 200 metres from the museum. If you have any questions, please contact 02104 9797-0.

Accessibility at the Neanderthal Museum

Our accessibility is certified by ‘Reisen für Alle’ and the entire museum and the Höhlenblick adventure tower are barrier-free. A special app, the floor guidance system and tactile exhibits guide visitors through the exhibition.

Museum café

A perfect museum visit also includes at least one good cup of coffee. The museum café serves savoury sandwiches, cakes and snacks. A special highlight: the view of the wonderful Neandertal valley from the roof terrace.
