Fossil Find: Ape or Human?

Workshop
Target group
from lower secondary, ages 13 & above
Content

Apes and humans have common ancestors. If you compare their bone structure, you will find a number of similarities as well as some differences. These differences are evidence of evolutionary adaptation to the respective living conditions. By which skeletal features can I distinguish an ape from a human? Which skeletal structures have changed in the course of evolution? Which have remained the same? In this workshop you will learn to distinguish the typical skeletal features of apes and humans. With this knowledge, you will analyse five casts of internationally known fossils and determine whether they are the remains or traces of a human or an ape. No prior knowledge is required.

Procedure

In an introductory discussion, you will be given specific observation criteria and an introduction to the specialist terminology. You will then work independently in small groups at five stations, which will be rotated two to three times. At the final ‘press conference’ you will present your results. The workshop is also offered in English for a small surcharge.
