Why are Neanderthals still so interesting to us more than 150 years after their discovery? The reasons are complex. It has long since become an icon of the Ice Age - one of Germany's best-known brands. It is our closest relative in human evolution. For geneticists in particular, it is an enormously important object of research. Because by analysing its genome, we can better understand our genome. This is a great opportunity for medical progress. Neanderthals experienced dramatic climate changes first hand. In short, when we deal with Neanderthals, it is really about us - they are our evolutionary mirror.
